Titilope Sonuga is a Nigerian-born spoken word poet. She traces her spoken word roots to the oral tradition of the Yoruba tribe from which she originates. A respected and active member in the regional and national poetry communities, Titilope is a current member of the 2010 Edmonton Poetry Festival Board of Directors, and the SpoCan (Spoken Word of Canada) Board of Directors. Following a successful debut on the national stage as a member of Team Calgary at the 2009 Canadian Festival of Spoken Word, Titilope in collaboration with Rouge Lounge in Edmonton launched “Rouge Poetry”, a weekly spoken word night that features established and aspiring poets and musicians in the community. In 2010 Rouge Lounge held its first slam series in which Titilope won the title of Slam Champion, leading the inaugural Edmonton Slam Team to a 5th place finish at the Canadian Festival of Spoken Word in Ottawa, Ontario. Sonuga is featured on the 2009 release of the Mahogany Public collaborative album, “Jali”, a project that showcases noted Edmonton spoken word artists and musicians. She continues to work towards the growth of spoken word poetry within her community as a founding member of the Breath In Poetry Collective, a group of poets and poetry enthusiast that work to create spaces for expression in the Edmonton community. She also conducts writing and performance workshops in Edmonton schools as a means to nurture the voices of the youth in the community. She is a dynamic performer with a captivating message, a “perfect pendulum swinging Afro Canadian, legacies of age old traditions, incantations of ancient griots, free-flowing spoken word poetry”.
