0 Comments 12 February 2011

Based in Ottawa, Ontario, PrufRock’s hip hop and spoken word performances have been known to create a stir of thought and inspiration. Compelled to write rhymes from a young age, his keen ability to write lyrics of content was inspired over the years by many legendary hip hop artist, such as Common, Mos Def and Slum Village. It wasn’t until twelfth grade that PrufRock became enchanted by the work of T.S. Elliot, The Love Song of J. Alfred PrufRock, that he found the poet in himself and his stage name.

In August 2009, he was invited to perform alongside poetry celebrity in Words of a Poet, an annual performance of poets from across North America. Performers included Shihan Van Clief who performed on the HBO television series Russell Simmons Presents Def Poetry, Dwayne Morgan, the recipient of numerous Canadian poetry awards, and travels extensively to perform, John Akpata and Andrew Abraham. His work has been featured on the 2009 Ottawa slam poetry.

His first solo album is a diverse collection of thoughts, feelings and outlooks on life and was released in January 2010. The positive, meaningful messages of life, happiness and acceptance of responsibility is mixed in with light hearted commentary. The album, written entirely by PrufRock, is quickly on its way to becoming an underground classic able to stand the test of time.

2010 progressed to see him becoming part of the Ottawa Capital Slam team, which then went on to win the Canadian Festival of Spoken Word championship. Along the way he has also traveled to Saskatoon to feature in a show, won two Speak Out competitions, one in Kitchener and another in Toronto, and performed all over Ottawa performing poetry as well as perfecting his skills on the turn table.

You can catch PrufRock at the February slam, temporarily re-located to Brennan’s Beer Bistro, on February  18. Doors @ 7:30, show @ 8.
