August is here already and we have yet another fantastic installment of the London Poetry Slam coming up! Bring your friends, bring your fam, heck, bring a stranger and enjoy a night of inspiration and fun. Sign up to slam, hit the open mic, or just sit back and enjoy having your mind blown.
Our feature poet this month is hot both on and off the mic. LPS is excited to welcome Raissa Simone, from Kingston, Ontario.
Though only recently breaking into competitive slam, Raissa is no stranger to poetry- she has had po
etry published in Queen’s publications ‘The Undergraduate Review’ and ‘Ultraviolet Magazine,’ and recently worked on the editorial board for ‘The Undergraduate Review.’ She was a national finalist at the Canadian Festival of Spoken Word in October 2011, helping bring Kingston to a record-tying fourth place finish – the best ever performance for a first-year community at the national poetry slam championships. Raissa’s work has been described as unrelentingly surprising; she draws the listener in with vivid imagery, confession and a penchant for storytelling. When she’s not wearing her poet hat, Raissa spends her days working away at her Master’s degree and playing a bit of ukulele.
As always the slam is:
- at London Music Club, 470 Colborne Street, London ON
- doors at 730, slam at 8 pm
- PWYC min. $5
**Also join us for our Saturday workshop with the lovely Raissa, Aug. 18th, 12-2 pm, at the Palace Theatre on Dundas St. Bring poems to share or work on, or just come and soak it all in. No experience necessary.
