This month our feature poet is Shelly Grace from Toronto, ON!

Shelly Grace is a spoken word artist who resides in Toronto. This fall she won the Canadian Festival of Spoken Word with the team Up From The Roots, becoming a National Champion. She has also competed at the National Poetry Slam and CUPSI with teams from Ryerson University.

Shelly grew up with a love for writing and in 2013 performed at an open mic and later went on to discover slam poetry. At her first slam she qualified to be on the first Canadian team to head to CUPSI in the US. In 2017 Shelly ran a workshop with London Poetry Slam and has always wanted to come back. She can be found at slams and events throughout Toronto, practising her craft and sharing her stories. In 2020 she is pushing to share more and grow her craft.

She has strong believe in the power of storytelling for healing and expression. Her poetry deals with things very personal to her and she uses her art as a way to process and grow. As a woman of colour she is loud and unapologetic about her experiences with sexism and racism. Using her experiences in poetry for healing, teaching and community building.

More than anything she believes in community and the support that is needed within the poetry community as people unpack big stories. She believes all of us as poets, organizers and fans of the art form need to make sure poetry remains healing.
