The Liberation of Art

An Examination of the Use of Art in Black Liberation

Artists such as Augusta Savage (sculptor), Nina Simone (Singer), Maya Angelou (Poet), Langston Hughes (Poet), Billie Holiday (Singer), NWA (Rap Group), Kendrick Lamar (Rapper), etc. have been representative of one of Black/African Americans most notable qualities resilience. These artists have highlighted the generational practice of using art as a form of finding liberation, and advocating for it for our community. In this workshop, I intend to highlight the subtle and dramatic changes in their methodologies over time, as well as cultural/political shifts. Now in the midst of this workshop we will also take inspiration from these artists to speak on and describe through the advent of poetry our own journeys of liberation.

Our examples will be:
“Strange Fruit” Billie Holiday
“I too sing America” Langston Hughes
“Still I Rise” Maya Angelou
“F Da Police” NWA
“Alright” Kendrick Lamar
